What are Polynucleotides?
Polynucleotides are an injectable bio-stimulator. These flexible molecules, derived from fish fragments, closely resemble human DNA. If you've heard of the 'salmon-sperm facial,' this is what the buzz is about. The primary aim of the injections is to encourage our cells to produce essential components that diminish with age. This treatment "can alter the expression of DNA." Polynucleotides enhance collagen and elastin production by activating fibroblast cells, while also promoting tissue regeneration and improving skin tone and elasticity. In addition to bio-remodeling, this treatment offers antioxidant and hydrating benefits, resulting in skin that appears and feels revitalised.
How Do Polynucleotides Differ from Injectable Skin Boosters?
While the effects of these treatments are similar, polynucleotides extend beyond mere hydration—unlike hyaluronic acid skin boosters such as Profhilo, Seven Hyal 2000, Lumi Pro, Revs 32, and Sunekos Performa. They actively engage with cells to stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. These treatments are effective in areas where many skin boosters fall short, including the eyes, lips, and forehead. This aspect particularly appealed to me, as my Profhilo treatments were unable to address the delicate under-eye region, and I preferred to avoid dermal fillers. Therefore, polynucleotides provide a more comprehensive solution for challenging areas, delivering not only hydration but also revitalisation and structural enhancement to the skin.
Where Are Polynucleotides Typically Injected?
They can be effectively applied under the eyes, on the face and neck, and even enhance the jawline and cheekbones. Currently, the eye area is the most sought-after treatment. Polynucleotides for under-eye concerns are revolutionising cosmetic practices. Many of my clients are dissatisfied with their under-eye appearance but aren’t suitable candidates for tear-trough fillers due to under-eye bags or tissue elasticity issues. Now, with polynucleotides, I can significantly improve this area for patients of all ages. Furthermore, for those already using tear-trough fillers to address hollowness, integrating polynucleotides into their treatment plan can extend the time between filler sessions, enhancing overall results.
Who Are Suitable Candidates for Polynucleotide Treatments?
Polynucleotide treatments offer a versatile solution for many individuals, though certain groups should proceed with caution. As these products are derived from animal sources, they are not suitable for vegetarians, vegans, or those with fish allergies. Additionally, similar to other injectable procedures, their use is not advised during pregnancy or breastfeeding. I would not recommend this treatment for younger individuals unless there is a specific condition being addressed. However, “the natural aspect of this treatment and it's adaptability to various anatomies means that almost anyone can be a candidate.
At our clinic, and ideally as standard practice in the field of cosmetic procedures, we prioritise a comprehensive medical history review before any treatment. It is essential for providers to screen for any psychological disorders or red flags prior to aesthetic treatments. This commitment to quality ensures that clients receive safe and effective care tailored to their needs.
When Do You See the Results of Polynucleotides, and How Long Do They Last?
You can expect to see results quite quickly after your first session. However, the second session is crucial for kickstarting the remodeling process. The treatment continues to work for the first 12 weeks, enhancing results over time, with noticeable improvements and lifts occurring after the initial session. With each subsequent session, these positive effects became increasingly evident, resulting in a more rejuvenated and youthful look. The duration of results can vary based on individual skin characteristics and overall health; however, many clients find that the benefits of polynucleotide treatments last for several months, making it a valuable addition to their skincare routine.
Protocol
Polynucleotide treatments often require a course of 2-3 sessions about 2-4 weeks apart. Following the initial treatment course, it's important for clients to engage in regular maintenance doses to preserve their rejuvenated appearance. This commitment to ongoing treatments ensures that the skin remains revitalised and the benefits are sustained over a longer period. Consequently, patients should be prepared for both the regularity of these sessions and the financial investment required to maintain their desired results.
